(7th April, 2016, Changshu) China’s first purpose-built aluminium body shop has been announced to be completed and put into production in Chery Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Chery Jaguar Land Rover”) Changshu Plant. Chery Jaguar Land Rover aluminium body shop covers an area of 48,384 square meters and possesses world leading self-pierce riveting and adhesive joining technologies and equipment, with an automation ratio of 100%. Chery Jaguar Land Rover announced that the most dynamic business sedan, the Jaguar XFL will be the first local Jaguar model. This mid-large luxury sedan will further line-up company portfolio, with both SUV and sedan and will hit the market at the second half of this year.

Inherit from Jaguar Land Rover, Chery Jaguar Land Rover introduced the most leading premium light weight technology into China, which is the most intelligent and green aluminium technology.
Aluminium alloy has advantages of being light, strong and recyclable compared with traditional steel materials, which are crucial to automobile design. The all-new Jaguar XFL is 28% stiffer than the first-generation Jaguar XF. In terms of driving dynamics and handling, aluminium alloy can also bring more wiggle room to car designers to optimize weight distribution and give the body more space for complex technology. Comparing with conventional body platform, intelligent aluminium architecture has the advantage of modular design that can brings a greater flexibility into product.
Chery Jaguar Land Rover creatively applies advanced aluminium materials of various series and features to intelligent aluminium architecture, realizing a nearly 50:50 front-back weight distribution of body design.
The aluminium content of the all-new Jaguar XFL reaches 75%, highest in China automotive industry. PT3 (Pretreatment 3rd generation) patent technology, co-owned by Jaguar Land Rover and the world’s top aluminium material supplier Novelis, has also been applied specially for Chery Jaguar Land Rover model. The RC5754 high-strength aluminium alloy is customized by Novelis for Jaguar Land Rover’s exclusively use, which is recyclable and has splendid strength, corrosion resistance, connectivity and formability and is applied for reinforcers. Besides, the exclusively adopted AC300 T61 high-strength aluminium alloy crush structure has the advantages of high strength and high energy absorption.
The first purpose-built aluminium body shop in China adopts aerospace-inspired technology
While applying aluminium, the favourable metal, to automobile manufacturing, Jaguar Land Rover is the pioneer to introduce aerospace-classed self-pierce riveting and adhesive joining technologies. Following the globally unified standard, Chery Jaguar Land Rover introduced the premium technology and applied in aluminium body shop.
Chery Jaguar Land Rover aluminium body shop is the first purpose-built aluminium body shop in China. It has 335 robots, of which the number of self-piercing riveting robots is 232, the most riveting robots owned by OEM in China. The shop is 100% automated.
Self-pierce riveting is so far one of the most environmental-friendly joint technology in the industry which needs air supply only, no need of cooling water while delivering zero joint deformation or splash, with zero pollution during the entire process. Rivet has higher fatigue resistance and static tightness which largely strengthen body rigidity and can undertake longer and stronger clash in accident.
By adopting self-pierce riveting and adhesive joining technology, body connection strength will be 2 to 3 times stronger than simple riveting. The application of this technology accounts for 72% in the aluminium body connecting process of Chery Jaguar Land Rover, highest in the industry in China.
In order to monitor the manufacturing quality of aluminium body in an all-round and real-time manner, Chery Jaguar Land Rover adopts Premium Quality Assurance System, including continuous in-process control of self-pierce riveting, visual monitoring system of the adhesive, in line dimensional control system, off-line NDT analysis, destructive testing and so on.
